Shop AMAZON and Make Easy Money forWarner!
Hello Parents,
Like to shop on Amazon? Like to earn easy money for Warner?
Here’s all you have to do.
1. Click HERE and start shopping!
Just so you know, it doesn’t cost you any more money to shop Amazon this way. And your purchases are completely anonymous – so no one will rib you about your love of Taylor Swift or your penchant for romantic fiction.

If you can, please shop this way instead of using Amazon Smile.  Warner only gets .5% on Amazon Smile vs. 4 – 8% if you shop through this link.  That’s a huge difference!  If our Warner families take this easy step, we can raise a lot of money for Warner with almost no extra effort. SPREAD THE WORD TO FRIENDS AND RELATIVES!
It’s so easy and our school gains so much! That’s why we’re asking everyone to make a habit of clicking on Warner‘s Amazon link (on the right hand side of the Warner What‘s Happening) to do their shopping on Amazon for the rest of the year. Thanks for your support!
Book Fair – Save the Date

Congratulations, Boys’ Soccer Team!
The boys’ soccer team won all three of their games on Saturdayand will advance to the next round. Come cheer them on at Marina del Rey Middle School Saturday May 7th. The girls’ team plays there this weekend – come on out and support them too!

Way to Go, 5th Graders!
Congratulations to our 5th graders for their generosity and compassion. They recently completed their community service, Hope in a Suitcase (www.hopeinasuitcase.org).
The students learned about foster care and HIAS’ role in helping foster children. Then, each student was tasked with writing a comforting note and packing a suitcase or duffel bag with essential goods (i.e., blanket, pajamas, socks, etc.). These suitcases were collected last week and will be given to foster children throughout Los Angeles.
Way to go, Class of 2016!
Middle School Enrichment Program

THE WARNER AMAZON ONE CLICK TO SHOP IS READY! DO ALL YOUR AMAZON AND TOYS ‘R’US SHOPPING AND MAKE EASY MONEY FOR WARNER!

Here’s all you have to do:

1. Instead of going straight to the Amazon website to shop, go to the new www.WarnerWave.com website.

2. On the left hand sidebar, you’ll see an Amazon logo.  Click on that Amazon logo and you’ll be taken to the Amazon website you always go to, where you can shop like you normally do.  (There’s no difference, Prime Memberships, etc, it’s all still there)

3. If you go through Amazon to access Toys R Us and other Amazon partners, Warner gets credit and a percentage of those sales as well!

The BIG DIFFERENCE is that when you go through the WarnerWave website to shop, and buy, Amazon will give a percentage of any money you spend to your child’s school!  If our Warner families take this easy step, we can raise a lot of money for Warner with almost no extra effort. (Really, just 1 extra click on your part.) SPREAD THE WORD TO FRIENDS AND RELATIVES!

Just so you know, it doesn’t cost you any more money to shop Amazon through Warner. And your purchases are completely anonymous – so no one will rib you about your love of Taylor Swift or your penchant for romantic fiction.

It’s so easy and our school gains so much!  That’s why we’re asking everyone to make a habit of going throughwww.WarnerWave.com to do their shopping on Amazon, for the rest of the year.

That’s why we’re asking everyone to make a habit of going through www.WarnerWave.com to do their shopping on Amazon, for the rest of the year.

Thanks for your support.

Parenting Tech — App Safety 2016
(By Alan W. Silberberg, father of 2 Warner kids + 1 Alumni, and Founder of Digijaks which is a cyber security company specializing in social media and mobile. He is a member of the California Cyber Security Task Force + a Subject Matter Expert on Cyber Security for the U.S. SBA.)
FIRST FOLLOW UP COLUMN FROM DECEMBER AND JANUARY TALKS:
During the talks I gave this past December and January, many people had questions about this part of the speech.
App safety. That sounds a little scary, and perhaps for some people, if not many, like science fiction. Considering that the first thing most kids do when they get to use their parents’ phone or tablet (or use their own) is to use apps. Apps as games. Apps as communication. Apps as drawing. Apps as cameras. Sometimes the apps are combinations of things.
Facebook has admitted that they can trigger the microphone on your smartphone or tablet through their mobile apps to “listen to ambient noises and suggest content you might find interesting…” But – they are one of the only companies admitting to this practice.
How often do you check the app privacy settings? Before you or your kids download them from the app stores? You should check them every single time. Game apps are notorious for asking for: every single app permission – allowed by that device. Why? Because most kids and most parents simply do not ever actually read the permission requests for apps. Instead, we usually just click accept, and boom there it is. Why is this seeming innocent thing such a problem?
1. Apps can serve malware and viruses through your devices once the permissions are granted. This can lead to identify theft, compromising of personal and or financial information and can provide information about your kids to strangers with ill intent. (While this is rare on the Apple store directly or Google play store, it is quite common for apps downloaded outside of the stores.) SOLUTION: Set all your devices to only download apps from the official app stores. Depending on your phone or device, you will need to check the settings, and specifically for apps and or the default download settings. Don’t download apps that ask for every permission unless there is a good reason.
2. Apps can record the user’s interactions on the device and/or online through various tracking software. This leads to profiling and creation of databases about our kids, with a permanence attached to their names that will follow them for the rest of their lives. Most of the time this is done in the background, ie, surreptitiously, and kids’ apps and games are highly vulnerable to this kind of intrusion and potential privacy breach. Delete apps that do this; look at permissions on each app to determine which ones can.
3. Apps can trigger the gps or “geo-location,” or the camera, or SMS messaging, or email, and/or contacts and also ask for permission to read the contents of all these files on the

device. When they “read” them they are also building databases about your kids and you. These databases are used to profile you and your kids and to create permanent records that may or may not be accurate. There is no reason why an app outside of an email or social media app would need access to emails, and SMS messages, or photos, or your contacts, and or geo locations. Games do not for sure. Drawing apps do not.
4. Apps can be “trojan horses” for something else. Kids can be especially vulnerable online to clicking on things that look cool, or are flashing with bright colors, without thinking through the consequences of possible malware or viruses. Again, set your devices to only download apps from the official app stores. If the app starts acting weird, delete it from your device. There are ways to monitor usage by apps on phones and tablets. When you see high memory use or high cpu use by the app (depending on the device this can be found in settings,) and power. By using one of the tools listed below to find apps that are out of normal range; what you find is often an indicator that it is doing something over the internet that it should not with information on your tablet or device.
5. Not paying attention to what your kids are downloading and from where. Why is this a problem? Because a high percentage of problems online come from inattention, being naïve or simply being lazy. This is especially true with how kids interact with the internet and how their parents are involved. To too many parents, apps, games, websites are just another form of TV, in other words, a bad substitute for parenting.
Solutions:
Find an app to scan other app permissions – – like
Norton 360 Mobile or Malwarebytes or Lookout – – that will pre-screen new apps for problems, and they can be used to show the app permissions of apps you have already put on-board your devices.
Talk to your kids often about which apps they are using, and why. Look at the app permission settings. If the app is asking for everything the device can do, that is a big red flag, especially with apps that kids are using. The picture below is of an Android app that Digijaks created, that has optimal app permissions. In other words it asks for almost no permissions. No email access. No SMS access. No geo location access. No picture access. Contrast this photo the two bad ones and to the app permissions of 99% of the apps you and your kids have on your devices.

Issue: #28 Week of 3/28/2016
Principal’s Corner – A Message from Principal Kamau

Dear Warner Community:
I trust you and your loved ones have enjoyed this time off and have a spring in your step!
The next two months, April and May, are especially demanding for our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. On April 11, 2016, we begin SBAC testing. SBAC testing is completed on iPads or in the computer lab. Testing will be administered Monday – Thursday 8:45am – 11:00am and the schedule is as follows:
Dates
Grade Level
April 11 – April 15
3rd & 4th
April 18 – April 21
3rd – 5th
April 25 – April 28
3rd – 5th
May 2 – May 6
4th & 5th
May 9 – May 12
3rd & 5th
It has been shown that students do better on testing when they arrive to school with time to spare, get plenty of rest the previous night, and eat breakfast.  By beginning the day right, our students are sure to do well!
Spring Sing was a beautiful event. It was a gorgeous day, lots of smiling faces, adults included. Congratulations Ms. Ryb for giving us happy memories! Following Spring Sing, Warner staff was honored with a Mexican themed lunch organized by Ms. Paula Lewis and Ms. Kathie Lowell. We adore you and thank you Ms. Paula and Ms. Kathie!
On behalf of Warner staff, thank you to Warner parents who took on the technology-funding call in March. Thank you to Jeannine Sehati and Michael Schlesinger for organizing the paddle-raise during Spring Auction and for continuing the fundraising push following Spring Auction night. The funds raised will be used to purchase a new Mac computer for every classroom.  I am truly grateful! It is my desire to continually move Warner Avenue to a place where technology is as common as a pencil. When was the last time you posted a letter to a friend? It is my belief that we should educate our children for their future not our past.
There is much to do – Warner partnerships create pathways!

eScrip has rebate relationships with many different vendors.  Go to www.escrip.com  and register your grocery cards (Pavilions, Vons); Macy’s card; and all credit cards.  Shop at your usual stores in town.  If you use your registered card for a purchase, Warnerautomatically receives a percentage.  If you go through escrip.com online shopping mall, many more merchants are available that will give Warner a % of your purchases.  You must renew your Von’s registration with escrip every September.
TargetTarget
Every time you use your Target Redcard or Target credit card when you shop, Warner gets 1% of your total purchases by calling 800-316-6142 and designating Warner as your school.  Or register online at
www.target.com/redcard
