Principal’s Corner: A Message from Ms. Kamau
Dear Warner Community:
I am glad to say that our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are in the  final week of SBAC testing. The testing schedule was designed to lower testing stress by reducing the length of time spent on daily testing. I am confident that students have shown their best work  and the scores will reflect the same. SBAC scores will be released in  the fall.
We are on the home stretch and students and staff at Warnerare hard at work to finish the year strong! Fifth grade students are excited about the culmination ceremony to be held on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 9:00am. (Bitter Sweet!)
I believe and know that in the new school year, we will continue to grow academically and in strengthening the partnerships that make Warner Avenue the Best School in the District! WarnerAvenue School will continue the following programs for all students in 2016-2017:
  • Visual Arts program
  • Computer literacy program
  • District music and drama program
  • Field trips for academic enrichment
  • Library visits
  • Physical Education with Coach Diamond
  • Science program
  • STAR after-school program
  • Teacher Assistants
  • Winter and Spring Sings
Please take a moment to support Charlene Golbahary, 5th grade
student. She is passionate about eliminating the negative effects of smoking on society. CLICK HERE to visit her website to learn more.
I look forward to a brilliant ending to 2015-2016 and a stronger
2016-2017 school year!
Be Well: Be Kind
Respectfully,
Agnes Kamau

Shop AMAZON and Make Easy Money forWarner!
Hello Parents,
Like to shop on Amazon? Like to earn easy money for Warner?
Here’s all you have to do.
1. Click HERE and start shopping!
Just so you know, it doesn’t cost you any more money to shop Amazon this way. And your purchases are completely anonymous – so no one will rib you about your love of Taylor Swift or your penchant for romantic fiction.

If you can, please shop this way instead of using Amazon Smile.  Warner only gets .5% on Amazon Smile vs. 4 – 8% if you shop through this link.  That’s a huge difference!  If our Warner families take this easy step, we can raise a lot of money for Warner with almost no extra effort. SPREAD THE WORD TO FRIENDS AND RELATIVES!
It’s so easy and our school gains so much! That’s why we’re asking everyone to make a habit of clicking on Warner‘s Amazon link (on the right hand side of the Warner What’s Happening) to do their shopping on Amazon for the rest of the year. Thanks for your support!

Congratulations to our 5th graders for their generosity and compassion. They recently completed their community service, Hope in a Suitcase (www.hopeinasuitcase.org).
The students learned about foster care and HIAS’ role in helping foster children. Then, each student was tasked with writing a comforting note and packing a suitcase or duffel bag with essential goods (i.e., blanket, pajamas, socks, etc.). These suitcases were collected last week and will be given to foster children throughout Los Angeles.

Parenting Tech — App Safety 2016
(By Alan W. Silberberg, father of 2 Warner kids + 1 Alumni, and Founder of Digijaks which is a cyber security company specializing in social media and mobile. He is a member of the California Cyber Security Task Force + a Subject Matter Expert on Cyber Security for the U.S. SBA.)
FIRST FOLLOW UP COLUMN FROM DECEMBER AND JANUARY TALKS:
During the talks I gave this past December and January, many people had questions about this part of the speech.
App safety. That sounds a little scary, and perhaps for some people, if not many, like science fiction. Considering that the first thing most kids do when they get to use their parents’ phone or tablet (or use their own) is to use apps. Apps as games. Apps as communication. Apps as drawing. Apps as cameras. Sometimes the apps are combinations of things.
Facebook has admitted that they can trigger the microphone on your smartphone or tablet through their mobile apps to “listen to ambient noises and suggest content you might find interesting…” But – they are one of the only companies admitting to this practice.
How often do you check the app privacy settings? Before you or your kids download them from the app stores? You should check them every single time. Game apps are notorious for asking for: every single app permission – allowed by that device. Why? Because most kids and most parents simply do not ever actually read the permission requests for apps. Instead, we usually just click accept, and boom there it is. Why is this seeming innocent thing such a problem?
1. Apps can serve malware and viruses through your devices once the permissions are granted. This can lead to identify theft, compromising of personal and or financial information and can provide information about your kids to strangers with ill intent. (While this is rare on the Apple store directly or Google play store, it is quite common for apps downloaded outside of the stores.) SOLUTION: Set all your devices to only download apps from the official app stores. Depending on your phone or device, you will need to check the settings, and specifically for apps and or the default download settings. Don’t download apps that ask for every permission unless there is a good reason.
2. Apps can record the user’s interactions on the device and/or online through various tracking software. This leads to profiling and creation of databases about our kids, with a permanence attached to their names that will follow them for the rest of their lives. Most of the time this is done in the background, ie, surreptitiously, and kids’ apps and games are highly vulnerable to this kind of intrusion and potential privacy breach. Delete apps that do this; look at permissions on each app to determine which ones can.
3. Apps can trigger the gps or “geo-location,” or the camera, or SMS messaging, or email, and/or contacts and also ask for permission to read the contents of all these files on the

device. When they “read” them they are also building databases about your kids and you. These databases are used to profile you and your kids and to create permanent records that may or may not be accurate. There is no reason why an app outside of an email or social media app would need access to emails, and SMS messages, or photos, or your contacts, and or geo locations. Games do not for sure. Drawing apps do not.
4. Apps can be “trojan horses” for something else. Kids can be especially vulnerable online to clicking on things that look cool, or are flashing with bright colors, without thinking through the consequences of possible malware or viruses. Again, set your devices to only download apps from the official app stores. If the app starts acting weird, delete it from your device. There are ways to monitor usage by apps on phones and tablets. When you see high memory use or high cpu use by the app (depending on the device this can be found in settings,) and power. By using one of the tools listed below to find apps that are out of normal range; what you find is often an indicator that it is doing something over the internet that it should not with information on your tablet or device.
5. Not paying attention to what your kids are downloading and from where. Why is this a problem? Because a high percentage of problems online come from inattention, being naïve or simply being lazy. This is especially true with how kids interact with the internet and how their parents are involved. To too many parents, apps, games, websites are just another form of TV, in other words, a bad substitute for parenting.
Solutions:
Find an app to scan other app permissions – – like
Norton 360 Mobile or Malwarebytes or Lookout – – that will pre-screen new apps for problems, and they can be used to show the app permissions of apps you have already put on-board your devices.
Talk to your kids often about which apps they are using, and why. Look at the app permission settings. If the app is asking for everything the device can do, that is a big red flag, especially with apps that kids are using. The picture below is of an Android app that Digijaks created, that has optimal app permissions. In other words it asks for almost no permissions. No email access. No SMS access. No geo location access. No picture access. Contrast this photo the two bad ones and to the app permissions of 99% of the apps you and your kids have on your devices.

Warner What’s Happening 3/28/16

April 14, 2016 by sabrina

WH Logo
Issue: #28 Week of 3/28/2016
Principal’s Corner – A Message from Principal Kamau

Dear Warner Community:
I trust you and your loved ones have enjoyed this time off and have a spring in your step!
The next two months, April and May, are especially demanding for our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. On April 11, 2016, we begin SBAC testing. SBAC testing is completed on iPads or in the computer lab. Testing will be administered Monday – Thursday 8:45am – 11:00am and the schedule is as follows:
Dates
Grade Level
April 11 – April 15
3rd & 4th
April 18 – April 21
3rd – 5th
April 25 – April 28
3rd – 5th
May 2 – May 6
4th & 5th
May 9 – May 12
3rd & 5th
It has been shown that students do better on testing when they arrive to school with time to spare, get plenty of rest the previous night, and eat breakfast.  By beginning the day right, our students are sure to do well!
Spring Sing was a beautiful event. It was a gorgeous day, lots of smiling faces, adults included. Congratulations Ms. Ryb for giving us happy memories! Following Spring Sing, Warner staff was honored with a Mexican themed lunch organized by Ms. Paula Lewis and Ms. Kathie Lowell. We adore you and thank you Ms. Paula and Ms. Kathie!
On behalf of Warner staff, thank you to Warner parents who took on the technology-funding call in March. Thank you to Jeannine Sehati and Michael Schlesinger for organizing the paddle-raise during Spring Auction and for continuing the fundraising push following Spring Auction night. The funds raised will be used to purchase a new Mac computer for every classroom.  I am truly grateful! It is my desire to continually move Warner Avenue to a place where technology is as common as a pencil. When was the last time you posted a letter to a friend? It is my belief that we should educate our children for their future not our past.
There is much to do – Warner partnerships create pathways!

February 1st Warner What’s Happening Newsletter

January 31, 2016 by dev

Warner What's Happening logoPrincipal’s Corner – A Message from Principal Kamau
Dear Warner Community:
Here comes leap-year February!
1. It is not too early to mention that state testing, Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) for our 3rd – 5thgrade students will be administered within a six-week window period, April 11 – May 20, 2016. To prepare for summative SBAC testing, students are periodically assessed using SBAC interim formative assessments.  You too can give your child additional practice at home by CLICKING HERE. Additionally, the Parent Guide to the SBAC pdf on the California Department of Education website is a great site to get answers and keep yourself informed  https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/documents/sbparentgde35.pdf
2. Gentle reminder, please complete the School Experience Survey as soon as you receive it. Let us express our shining school in print.
3. This is communication from Jan Davis, Administrator of Operations LD West on Warner Safety Improvement Plan as of Friday, January 29, 2016.  Below is an update on the security work that is being completed Warner ES (provided by Angelo Robinson):
  • The lighting replacement is in progress. The M&O Area started this right away so the school could see some progress.
  • Estimates (new CCTV system, upgrade lighting and camera/buzzer system, fence work and iron gates at the main entrance) with the exception of the lock replacements for all of the doors are now complete. The lock replacements will provide each teacher with a thumb turn on the inside to lock the doors in case of an emergency. The Lock Shop provided an estimate that was not completely what Angelo asked for so they are re-scoping it for him and will provide an estimate in a couple of days.

The estimates so far, with the exception of the Locks, is as follows:

  • ITD, new CCTV system – $315,373.
  • M&O, Lighting and buzzer/camera system – $36,020.
  • M&O, new fence and gates, Iron gates for main entrance – $30,414.
  • M&O, new locks and hardware for all doors – $TBD (I’m guessing about $80,000).
  • Sub-total cost is $ 461,807 with an unconfirmed estimate from the Lock Shop.
LD West will use A&I funds to cover the entire cost of $461,807.00.  I’ve asked to have the fencing and iron gates upgrades to begin as soon as possible.
In partnership we thrive!

Week of 1/25/2016
Principal’s Corner – A Message from Principal Kamau

Dear Warner Community:
It is time to complete the annual School Experience Survey. The survey is completed by parents, students, teachers and staff in LAUSD schools.
One parent survey per school is distributed to each household that includes a TK-12 student. For households with more than one student enrolled in the same school, the oldest student in the school will receive the survey. Parents may complete the paper survey and return it with their child to school OR you may complete it online. Surveys will come home on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Completing online? Have the 10-digit survey code ready before you click on the link for the appropriate survey. If you need verification that you completed the survey, you may print the last page that shows after you click submit. Please visithttps://achieve.lausd.net/Page/8397 to complete a survey online.
Student surveys are distributed in grades 3-12. The students complete the survey in school with teacher guidance.
Staff surveys for teachers, principals, administrators and all other staff may be completed online only. School Experience Surveys should be completed by all respondents by February 11, 2016.
School Experience Surveys are used to measure and rate schools as shown below under the new accountability system of CORE (California Office to Reform Education) Waiver. CORE Waiver provides a more holistic view of school and student performance than under NCLB. Core Waiver is rooted in shared learning and responsibility for student achievement. It is designed to instill a new collective and individual moral imperative to prepare all students for success.
CORE Waiver vs. NCLB: School & Student Performance
Academic
Socio-Emotional
Culture and Climate
NCLB
Performance measured against ELA, Math, API and graduation rate targets
Not Included
Not Included
CORE Waiver
Academic performance broadened to include other subjects (e.g. science, history, writing) and other metrics (e.g. growth, 5th and 6th year graduation rates)
Non-Cognitive skills will be included, in addition to
measuring absentee and
suspension/expulsion
Student, staff, and parent
surveys included, in addition to Special Ed identification and ELL redesignation rates
There is a question on the survey about our Parent Center. Warner does not have a Parent Center because we are not a Title I school. The response should be N/A.
Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey. Warner’s culture and climate is increasingly growing in a positive direction. Take the time to put Warner on the list of BEST LAUSD School!
Be well: Be kind!

A Letter from a Warner Parent
Dear fellow parents: I’m the mother to four Warner students. Even if you don’t know me, please take the time to consider these thoughts.
I asked WAVE if I could write this letter, even though I’m not on the Board or responsible for fundraising.  I have developed some strong opinions after being in the front office during theDecember 2 lockdown/evacuation, sitting in on safety meetings, and then learning in the recent Monday WAVE meeting that fully 50% of our families are not donating to the Annual Fund.
In my opinion, it’s a disservice to our kids to prioritize the campus’ security while at the same time failing to support the enrichment we fund.  You know all reasons to donate to the Annual Fund: computers, library, visual arts, music, P.E., class-size reduction and teaching aides.  The truth is, these same positions translate to real people whom your children trust, and who help them in case of an emergency.  It’s not just your children’s quality of education that is at stake with such low Fund participation — in my opinion, it’s also their emotional and physical safety in an emergency.
Without the Annual Fund, we’d have bigger classes.  How much harder would that evacuation have been if each teacher had 5+ more kids to track?   What if the next emergency is a major earthquake (a pretty realistic likelihood)?  Are our kids safer with more students for one teacher to calm down or to administer first aid to?  The Fund pays for teaching aides in every class, some of whom work in the afternoons.  In an earthquake or other threat, by having a TA we’ve doubled the adults in the room who know our children and who will help protect them.
In addition, the Fund also pays for Coach Diamond, whose role goes beyond just physical education.  She knows every single one of our kids and who their siblings are, and often who their caregivers are.  In the Wednesday evacuation, I saw her help pair kids with adults to go home faster.  And, if you think about it, our donations are the only reason we have any enrichment teachers who know every single kid across all grades.  Consider for yourself what it would mean if the next lockdown happens, and your child is in the library or computer lab but there’s no Ms. Lee or Mr. Crossley.  Having those tent-pole, trusted adults all our kids know contributes to their emotional well-being in an emergency.
The Annual Fund ask has never been based on fear mongering, and it shouldn’t become that.  And I fully understand how hard it is to come out-of-pocket if you’re feeling unhappy or insecure with our school.  But deciding only to pay for explicit security measures at the expense of the Fund, or choosing not to donate, would, to me, cut off our nose to spite our face.
If we can’t do better than 50% participation, we risk undermining our children’s safety at the exact moment when it has become a priority.  If you’re one of the parents who haven’t donated to the Annual Fund, please get your questions answered, think about donating what you can, and follow through so next year’s staffing budget isn’t compromised.
Thank you for giving these thoughts your consideration.
Sarah S.
Note from WAVE Presidents: To contribute to the Annual Fund, go to store.warnerwave.com.  Select option a, b or c (depending on your child’s grade) or choose your own amount.  Thank you.

Just so you know, it doesn’t cost you any more money to shop Amazon through Warner. And your purchases are completely anonymous – so no one will rib you about your love of Taylor Swift or your penchant for romantic fiction.

It’s so easy and our school gains so much!  That’s why we’re asking everyone to make a habit of going throughwww.WarnerWave.com to do their shopping on Amazon, for the rest of the year.

Thanks for your support.
