WARNER ANNUAL FUND
2019-20

DOUBLE YOUR ANNUAL FUND DONATION WITH MATCHING FUNDS!
Corporate matching gift programs are a great way to double your gift to the Annual Fund.  Many corporations match your generosity dollar for dollar.  This is a free and easy way to make your contribution go further!
Please go to https://www.1800runaway.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/corporate-match-directory.pdf to see a list of companies that offer matching programs for charitable contributions.  While this list is extensive, it may not contain every company that offers matching.  If it doesn’t contain your company and you aren’t sure if you have a matching program available, please check with your HR department.  That one call can do a lot to help support Warner.
Please consider making your donation today securely online at:
https://warnerfundraising.org/warner-annual-fund/
Thank you in advance for your continued support of our school

Word of the month: Responsibility

Responsibility is “taking ownership of one’s thoughts and actions.”  The choices we make, such as how we treat others, our choice of words, and how we handle life’s challenges, all depict personal responsibility.

Other ways our children can exemplify responsibility:
– Know what’s expected of them
– Take care of their things
– Do their best (e.g. have a good attitude, don’t give up)
– Think before they act
– Resolve conflicts peacefully

Responsibility charts are a great way to keep children accountable and monitor progress.

WARNER ANNUAL FUND
2019-20

Dear Warner Families:

I hope you had a wonderful summer and have enjoyed the first few weeks of school! Welcome to the 2019-20 school year and the launch of the 2019-20 Warner Annual Fund drive.

The Annual Fund is Warner’s highest giving priority, as it bridges the gap between the basic, minimum funding provided to Warner by LAUSD and the essential 21st century resources, services, and equipment necessary to promote the highly successful learning environment at Warner Avenue School. Your contribution to the Annual Fund pays for, among other programs and enhancements, teaching assistants in each classroom and on the school yard, writing and reading workshop programs, and helps ensure that computers, science, physical education, art, and music are deeply embedded in your child’s learning experience. It is because these programs and enhancements (among others) are paid for by the Annual Fund and not by LAUSD, that your donation to the Warner Annual Fund is so critical!

Please consider making your gift to the Annual Fund today, as each gift provides a direct and immediate benefit to our children! Contributions can be made via credit card, cash or a check, and can be paid in full, or spread out over three, six, and nine-month installment plans. Donations are tax deductible and can be made by going to:

https://warnerfundraising.org/warner-annual-fund/

Thank you in advance for your generosity and support of our children, and best wishes for a wonderful school year!

Director, Warner Annual Fund

Calling all party people!

Warner Party Book is now taking submissions for parties hosted by our fabulous Warner families!

  How does it work?
  • As many parents as are interested (usually between 1 and 6 host families works best) pick an event to plan.
  • The host families pay for the cost of the event, and tickets are sold on the website to our Warner community.
  • All funds raised go directly to WAVE to help fund our fabulous teachers’ aides, enrichment programs (science, art, performing arts, computer, etc.) and more!

  What type of events work?
  • ANYTHING that kids or adults would enjoy: a slime-making party, movie night, wine and cheese, bowling, Color Me Mine, work out classes, roller skating, cooking classes.

All party book hosts must submit their forms by SEPTEMBER 20th
so plan your party today!

For more info, and to fill out a Party Book Host Form, go to: www.warneravenueelementary.com/party-book
(or go to Warner website, Events, Party Book)

Word of the month: Responsibility

Responsibility is “taking ownership of one’s thoughts and actions.”  The choices we make, such as how we treat others, our choice of words, and how we handle life’s challenges, all depict personal responsibility.

Other ways our children can exemplify responsibility:
– Know what’s expected of them
– Take care of their things
– Do their best (e.g. have a good attitude, don’t give up)
– Think before they act

– Resolve conflicts peacefully

Responsibility charts are a great way to keep children accountable and monitor progress.

Kids with Character Ambassadors

Our 5th grade Kids with Character ambassadors have made new adopted pet owners and their new friends very happy! They worked diligently for several months soliciting pet supply donations from the community. They put together 80 bags of food, soaps, treats (even homemade) and toys that were donated to the Animal Hope & Wellness shelter for rescue dogs & cats going home with new families. Thank you to our ambassadors for warming hearts and bellies!

Week of 04/28/2019
A Message from Principal Kamau
Tea with the Principal – Tuesday, April 30th
Warner Walk – Friday, May 3rd
The 2019 Warner Walk is almost here! It’s less than a week away and don’t forget that your paper pledge sheets are due back to your teacher or the basket in the main office TOMORROW, Monday, April 29th.But don’t worry, even once you turn in your paper pledge sheets, you can still keep collecting pledges online UP UNTIL THURSDAY NIGHT!
As of today, Ms. Chan’s 1st Grade Class is currently atop our leader board for raising the most amount of money in online pledges. The classes with the highest collection of pledges in the TK-2 and 3-5 classes will each be rewarded with a class pizza party!
But don’t worry, there is still time to set up your child’s online donation site through PledgeStar – and it takes less than 5 minutes:
  • Go to https://pledgestar.com/warner
  • Click “Not Registered For This Year’s Event”
  • Enter your name and email address, then click “Submit”
  • Follow the instructions on-screen to register students – you can register multiple students under your account

We can’t wait to Take a Walk on the Wild Side with you – see you at the 2019 Warner Walk on Friday, May 3rd!

ISEE & Secondary School Talk – Wednesday, May 8th

Father/Daughter Dance – Sunday, May 19th
Please join us for dinner and dancing at Warner’s first ever Father-Daughter Dance! Sunday, May 19th at Maggiano’s at the Grove from 5:30-8pm.
This will be an exciting event and tickets include: dinner, refreshments, DJ, photo booth, face painting, games and more!  Tickets are available for purchase on the Warner website. Warner What’s Happening – 04/21/19

April 21, 2019 by e.pankau

Issue: #32
Week of 04/21/2019
Warner Walk – Friday, May 3rd
The 2019 Warner Walk is just two weeks away, on Friday, May 3rd from 1-2 pm. The Walk is our annual walk-a-thon event, during which students solicit pledges and then walk laps around the school to raise money for Warner – including extra teachers to reduce class sizes, teaching aides, and our amazing enrichments programs such as computer classes, art, science, performing arts and more! Parents may also join in the fun on May 3 – support the kids by decorating the streets and sidewalks surrounding Warner with chalk.  Then, walk with your kids or cheer them on from the sidelines!  Some basics about The Walk:
  • Your child has 2 ways to collect pledges:  a paper bid sheet or online, via Pledgestar. Complete instructions for both will be sent home this Friday in your child’s backpack, but you can start setting up your child’s online Pledegstar account now:
    • Go to https://pledgestar.com/warner
    • Click “Not Registered For This Year’s Event”
    • Enter your name and email address, then click “Submit”
    • Follow the instructions on-screen to register students – you can register multiple students under your account!
    • Email and socially share your link with friends and family!
  • We are looking for sponsors!  Please visit www.warneravenueelementary.com/product/warner-walk-sponsorship/ to learn about sponsorship opportunities! **Note: Wildcat sponsors are already considered Warner Walk sponsors and will receive an email about their sponsor benefits.
  • Please visit the Warner Walk table in the Khorshidi Family Courtyard starting 4/22 to get your Warner Walk gear! Show your Wildcat pride by wearing your Warner Walk t-shirt on Monday 4/29 for assembly and on the day of the Walk.
We can’t wait to Take a Walk on the Wild Side with you – see you at the 2019 Warner Walk!
If you would like to buy a corsage and boutonnière, please pre-purchase through the website. We look forward to seeing you all there!  Space is limited so please buy your tickets today!
https://warnerfundraising.org/product/father-daughter-dance/

Soles4Good – Donate Your Shoes

Please donate your gently used shoes (children and adult sizes) to the student run charity, Soles4Good. All shoes will be sent to impoverished youth and adults in India. Please leave your shoes in the large box outside the front office through Friday, April 26th.
Paul Revere Spring Musical – Newsies

Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right!
Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). Featuring the now classic songs Carrying the Banner, Seize the Day, and Santa Fe, Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.

Courage
Courage is not being afraid to be yourself. It’s something inside of us that helps us overcome fear. Courage can be a large act of heroism but it can also be quiet and a part of our everyday lives. It’s important to recognize the every day kinds of courage.
Courage is welcoming a new neighbor.
Courage is sticking up for a friend. Courage is trying something new.
Courage is smiling at a friend.
Courage is being the first to say sorry after an argument.

Courage is to say NO.

Warner What’s Happening – 03/17/19

March 18, 2019 by e.pankau

Week of 03/17/2019
A Message from Principal Kamau

The Paddle Raise Continues

The campaign to provide a state of the art computer lab to replace the 10+ year old computers currently in the computer lab is underway!  At the Spring Gala last Saturday, we raised an astounding amount – just over $53,000.  (For those of you that were at the Gala, the $68,000 figure shown on the screen was inaccurate due to duplicate entries of donations by Give Smart).  That is an incredible start, however, we would love to raise additional funds to dedicate to the computer lab, as well as build up an annual maintenance fund for the lab and equipment.  As such, if you were not able to attend the Gala, please consider donating now so that we can provide our children with new computers running on current operating systems.  The computers the children are currently learning on are older than most of the kids themselves!  They run on operating systems 2 to 3 generations old.  Technology is our future, and our children deserve an updated computer lab!
Go to https://wae2019.givesmart.com and find the ‘Donate Now” box in the middle of the event homepage to choose your donation amount. If you have already registered for bidding, you can click on the site you received via text.

We would also like to thank all of the parents who attended the Spring Gala and contributed to the paddle raise, as well as those who couldn’t attend but already donated – these families are recognized below.

Patience
Patience is waiting without getting upset. It helps us deal with things that may feel uncomfortable (e.g. waiting in a long line or saving our money to buy something we really want). Patience can help us build our good character:

* Waiting my turn (consideration/respect)
* Not complaining when I don’t get my way (understanding/less stress)
* Accepting what cannot be changed (compassion)
* Maintaining self-control (confidence)
* Keep trying (persistence/commitment)
A Note from the School’s Office
